New York session times in UK time: the open, the kill zone and US data
For a UK trader, the New York session is the afternoon. It's when US data lands, when the US stock market opens and when gold, the dollar pairs and the US indices make some of their biggest moves of the day. Here are the times that matter, in UK time, and the weeks when they all shift.
New York session times in UK time
| What | New York time | UK time (most of the year) | UK time (clock-change weeks) |

The clock-change weeks
The UK and the US change their clocks on different Sundays. The UK goes forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October; the US goes forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November. In between, New York is four hours behind the UK instead of five, and everything in the right-hand column applies.
| Year | Spring | Autumn |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 8 to 28 March | 25 to 31 October |
| 2027 | 14 to 27 March | 31 October to 6 November |
In those weeks, US data comes out at 12:30 UK and the stock market opens at 13:30 UK. Traders who forget get caught by the news an hour early. Check the economic calendar's time zone setting, and if you use a session indicator, check that its hours follow New York time rather than fixed UK times.
The London and New York overlap
From 13:00 to 16:00 or 17:00 UK, both of the world's biggest trading centres are open. It's the most liquid part of the day, with the tightest spreads and the biggest volume. EURUSD, GBPUSD and gold often make a large share of their daily range in the London morning and this overlap. More in forex market hours in UK time.
What happens in the New York session
- New York reads London first. If London trended, New York often continues it after a pullback. If London ran one way and stalled, New York often reverses it, starting with a run beyond London's high or low.
- US data sets the tone. Jobs and inflation figures at 13:30 UK can move gold and the dollar pairs sharply in seconds. Many traders stay flat for the release and trade the move after.
- Indices wake up at the cash open. NAS100 and US30 often move hardest in the first hour after 14:30 UK.
- The 16:00 fix. Big currency flows go through at London's 4pm fix, which can cause late spikes before London traders go home.
A simple New York routine (UK time)
- 11:45: check the calendar for US data at 13:30 (or 12:30 in the clock-change weeks).
- 12:00: mark London's high and low, and decide whether London trended or ranged.
- 12:00 to 15:00: look for one of two setups: the New York open reversal (a run beyond London's high or low, then a break back) or the continuation (a pullback into London's move, then a close back with the trend).
- 15:00: manage what's open, and stop looking for new trades.
- Log it. Your journal will soon show whether the afternoon pays you better than the morning.
