How much is 0.01 lot in gold? Gold lot sizes explained
Gold is the market where lot sizes surprise people most. A lot size that feels tiny on EURUSD can lose a frightening amount on XAUUSD, because gold moves so many dollars in a day. Here's exactly what each gold lot size is worth, so you know before you click.
Gold lot sizes at a glance
| Lot size | Ounces | Per $0.10 move (1 pip) | Per $1 move | Per $10 move |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | 1 | $0.10 | $1 | $10 |
| 0.05 | 5 | $0.50 | $5 | $50 |
| 0.10 | 10 | $1 | $10 | $100 |
| 0.50 | 50 | $5 | $50 | $500 |
| 1.00 | 100 | $10 | $100 | $1,000 |
This assumes the standard contract of 100 ounces per lot. A few brokers use a different size, so check yours: in MetaTrader, right-click XAUUSD in Market Watch and choose Specification, then look at the contract size.
Pips, points and dollars: why gold confuses everyone
Gold is priced to two decimal places, for example 4123.45. That creates three different “units” people talk about:
- A point: the smallest step MetaTrader shows, $0.01.
- A pip: usually $0.10, or 10 points. So $1 = 10 pips, and a $5 stop is 50 pips.
- A dollar: some traders and signal groups call a full $1 move “a pip”, which makes their numbers ten times smaller than yours.
How much margin does 0.01 lot of gold need?
UK retail traders can use leverage of up to 20:1 on gold, so the broker holds 5% of the position's value as margin. With gold at an illustrative $4,100:
1.00 lot = 100 oz = $410,000 of gold · 5% margin = $20,500
Margin is not what you can lose. It's a deposit the broker holds while the trade is open. What you can lose is set by your lot size and your stop, which is why the next section matters more.
Choosing your gold lot size
Work it out from the money you're willing to lose, never the other way round:
Here's the result for a pound account risking 1% per trade, at a GBPUSD rate of 1.34, rounded down to 0.01:
| Account | 1% risk | $3 stop | $5 stop | $10 stop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| £1,000 | £10 | 0.04 | 0.02 | 0.01 |
| £2,000 | £20 | 0.08 | 0.05 | 0.02 |
| £5,000 | £50 | 0.22 | 0.13 | 0.06 |
| £10,000 | £100 | 0.44 | 0.26 | 0.13 |

What about very small accounts?
0.01 is the smallest lot most brokers allow. On gold, 0.01 lot with a $5 stop costs about £3.73. To keep that at 1% of your account you need about £373. Below that, every gold trade risks more than 1%, so your choices are a tighter stop (only if the setup really allows it), accepting a bigger percentage, or trading forex pairs where the minimum costs less.
Why gold needs smaller lots than forex
At today's prices, gold can travel tens of dollars in a single session. A sensible stop on a gold M15 setup is often $3 to $8, while a EURUSD stop on the same timeframe might be 10 to 20 pips. The same money at risk therefore buys a much smaller gold position. If your gold lot sizes look small next to your forex ones, that's a sign you're sizing correctly.
